In my previous post about Beta Hydroxy Acids, I noted the importance of nourishing the skin when using acids or other active ingredients. In this post I have a handy trick for you that I saw @carolinehirons (aka. The queen of skincare) talk about on This Morning.

In the segment, she mentions that when treating spots, it’s really important not to over exfoliate and under nourish, which could leave your skin more inflamed than before. She recommends the ‘nuking and comforting’ method. This means that after you have treated (nuked) a spot with an acid, you need to comfort it, with an oil. One of the oils she recommends is squalane. I therefore instantly got online and purchased The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane.

Recently, squalane has become super popular in skincare products and this is why. The ingredient is one of the few oils that is naturally found in the skin meaning you are less likely to have a negative reaction to it (squalene, with an e, is found in the skin, but squalane, with an a, is a stabilised form found in products) and it can also be naturally derived from sugarcane meaning it’s vegan. The oil is super lightweight so don’t worry if you have oily skin as a little bit won’t cause an excess of sebum.

I use this oil directly on spots when they are in the healing process and all over the face if I want a boost of hydration. I have absolutely fallen in love with it and now have many other products that feature squalane as an ingredient. And as for this The Ordinary one, at £5.50, it’s hard to go wrong! Let me know if you've used this trick and whether it worked for you!

Bonus tip: Squalane can be used on the hair for heat protection, repairing breakages and shine as well as for use on the body for maximum hydration!

If you have any questions, or other products you’d like me to try and review, leave them in the comments. And don’t forget to subscribe to the blog using your email!

Lots of love,
